Benign Prostate Hypertrophy
The prostate is a gland in the male reproductive system, similar in form to a chestnut that is located in front of the rectum and just below the bladder, surrounding the urethra, produces a fluid (prostatic secretion) that comes along with the sperm in the ejaculation, and it is necessary for the viability of the spermatozoa. To its development and to perform its function the prostate requires the hormone testosterone.
WHAT HAPPENS WHEN PROSTATE INCREASES IN VOLUME?
The diameter of the urethra decreases the compression exerted, leading to a reduced urinary flow.
Initially, these complaints may be discrete, but as compression increases they become more noticeable
Increased urination during the day (pollakiuria)
Increased urination at night (nocturia)
Sudden and urgent desire to urinate (imperiousness)
Difficulty starting urination (hesitancy)
Abdominal effort need to urinate
Dripping at the end of urination
Weak flow and sometimes interrupted
Feeling of not having completely emptied the bladder (residual urine)
Inability to urinate despite the will
